Today we are talking about hygiene and toxins and the
precautions, but, we are forgetting about the safe and beautiful wooden toys. These
toys are hand-made and they don’t break easily like plastic toys. Today, you
will find plastic and metal toys everywhere in the markets and malls. This most ancient heritage art of Indian culture
is the verge of extinction. Wooden toys are rarely seen in houses in urban
areas. But, even today in rural areas, this tradition of making wooden toys is
alive because people buy these hand-made wooden toys for their children.
Why Wooden Toys?
But I always search for these beautiful and fascinating
wooden toys. The most trending items in wooden toys are multicolored toy-train,
jumble-up puzzles, small wooden kitchen set for girls, trolleys, cars and wide
range of animals and so on. These wooden puzzles are widely used in Montessori schools
and nursery classes to educate children. Wooden alphabets and numbers are also
kept in place of plastic ones. This is because these are so beautifully carved
and their finish competes with the plastic in the quality parameters.
The Global Recognition
Though these wooden toys are losing hold in local markets in
India, but, they are highly in demand in International markets. People all over
the world are using these wooden toys in the day to day routine. Our craftsmen are exporting these hand-madetoys all over the world. Today, several (Non-Government Organizations) NGO's are
helping these poor craftsmen to protect our heritage. These NGO’s are not only
arranging exhibitions and fares but are also connecting them to the outer world
to exhibit their art and talent.
So, next time when you go for window-shopping and you find
someone selling these beautiful handicraft wooden toys & games, wait there,
have a look and buy some for yourself. You will surely feel very happy after
helping these craftsmen.
